Chapter 17

Penn sat on the cold bleachers of a local indoor sports arena, watching West and a few of his teammates show kids how to play ball hockey. A group of excited moms and dads stood around, taking photos and chatting.

She checked her watch. They'd been here for at least an hour and a half, but she had no idea how much longer the event would run.

"Excuse me, but are you here with West Keller?"

Penn glanced over to see a petite girl with silver glasses and long, gorgeous red hair standing on the stairs.

"Yes," Penn answered, surprised.

"Oh, good." The girl climbed up the bleachers and sat in front of her. "Ryder said West was bringing someone. I'm Zoe Morgan, Ryder's fiancée."

"I’m sorry, I don't know who Ryder is." Penn gave an apologetic shrug. "Is he West's teammate?"

"Oh! I'm sorry. Yes, Ryder's the captain of the Kingsnakes and one of West's best friends." She pointed to a tall, sandy-haired guy helping a little girl shoot the ball at the net. "That's Ryder."

"Oh, okay. I've only met one other person from the team. I'm Penelope Foster, by the way. But call me Penn."

"Nice to meet you, Penn. I just got off work twenty minutes ago, and Ryder texted that you were here, so I hopped on the bus to come over. Figured you were probably bored and could use the company."

Penn nodded. "Sure."

Zoe threw her hands up dramatically. "As of now, I am officially on vacation for two weeks. Ahh."

Penn laughed. "You look like someone who is ready to relax."

Zoe pulled a pack of gum out of her purse and held it out. "I am, but Ryder and I are getting married in a few days. I should be home attending to a million details, but I needed a break. You would think planning a Vegas wedding would be easy. Not so much when you actually live here and have a ton of guests attending."

"Oh, congratulations!" Penn popped the stick of gum into her mouth. "West mentioned his friends were getting married on Saturday."

"West is in the wedding," Zoe told her. "He’s a groomsman. Will you be coming with him?"

Penn glanced out at the rink, where West showed a kid dressed in goalie equipment how to position himself in front of the net. "I'm not sure how long I'm in Vegas for, actually. I'm waiting for a part to be fixed on my car. I'm scheduled until Friday at the hotel, but it will depend on if they have the part in, I guess."

"I'm sure he'll ask you." Zoe pushed a strand of fiery red hair behind her ear. "I hope you can make it." She gestured toward the rink. "He’s been kind of down lately. Do you mind me asking how you guys met?"

"He rescued me from the side of the highway." She explained their meeting to Zoe, who hung on every word.

"Wow. Glad he came along in time," Zoe said. "That’s scary."

"It was. I’m grateful."

West and Ryder began signing autographs and taking pictures with the kids.
